Working From Home Tips: Your Essential Guide

Working from home can be great for various reasons, but it's not all sunshine and daisies. Whether it's an unstable internet connection, interruptive family members, or your work schedule creeping into your personal life, things can go wrong in unintended ways. Nevertheless, there's no challenge you can't overcome.

Even if you're working from home for the first time post-COVID or you're a seasoned pro, there are always new tips and tricks to leverage. Here's your essential guide to working from home so that you can make the most of this flexibility.

1. Create a Routine and Stick To It

How often have you made a routine that didn't even last a week? Creating it is easy, but following the routine tends to get us derailed pretty quickly. While working from home, make a routine as if you were working from the office. This way, it’s easier to follow, and you can stick with it in a more disciplined manner.

Here's something you can incorporate into your daily work-day routine:
  • * Wake up at least an hour before you start work.
  • * Take a walk, shower or drink coffee to freshen up and prepare for the day.
  • * Set a clearly defined work schedule and focus on work only within those hours.
  • * Discover your most productive hours and get your priorities done at that time.
  • * Plan the next day before going to bed.

2. Dedicated Workspace

Though the idea of working in your pyjamas on the living room couch is fun, it's not ideal for productivity. Without an office-like environment, it would be as if you're chilling and getting some work done on the side rather than working with some flexibility. Overall efficiency decreases simply because excessive comfort becomes a distraction or encourages procrastination.

A separate office room is best if you have enough space. If not, your home office setup could be as simple as a table and a chair at the end of your lounge room or bedroom. Make sure your home office workstation is comfortable and clutter-free for optimal productivity.

To utilise the limited available space at your home for an office setup, you can check out planning options online.

3. Optimum Office Furniture

Investing in home office furniture may seem a little too much, but you’ll go on to find out that it's worth every penny. High-quality office furniture will make you want to stay at your desk for longer, bringing positive impacts. You also drastically reduce the risk of back problems in the long term.

Setting up your home office with high-quality furniture may take a while, but Direct Office can deliver your furniture in top condition within 1-3 days anywhere in Australia.

4. Install Quality Technology

Remote work depends entirely on technology and gadgets, without which you’re basically unable to work from home. Don't let unstable internet connection or poor headphones hinder important video conferences.

Invest in solid wifi, good quality laptops and headphones. Install apps for video calls, screen recordings and screenshots. Set up other home office accessories. All this makes remote working much more convenient and productive.

5. Manage Distractions

A significant issue of working from home is the inevitable distraction from family members, pets, uninvited guests, household chores, or social media or even television due to the lack of physical monitoring. Distractions are everywhere, but they are so much more potent while working from home.

Here are a few ways to help avoid or manage such distractions:
  • * Set clear boundaries with people living with you (family or housemates) to not disturb you during work hours.
  • * Keep your phone away from your office desk and log out of your personal accounts from your work computer.
  • * Cook your meals the night before to prevent spending your entire break hours preparing lunch.

6. Communication is Key

Let's face it, despite all the perks of working from the comfort of your home, it gets lonely. There’s also the tendency for miscommunication or inadequate communication, which we can all relate to.

Stay connected with your peers and managers through professional communication channels such as Microsoft Teams, Slack or Mattermost. You can use video conferencing software such as Zoom or simply Google Meet for virtual gatherings and meetings or conferences. Chat with your teammates and regularly meet up online to know what’s going on, be it professionally or personally. This way, you have more open communication and socialise, at least to a degree.

Don’t think your communication is limited to your coworkers. Feel free to greet your neighbours or call your friends and family during your break for a quick getaway from work mode. Freshen yourself up and go strong.

7. Utilise Breaks to the Fullest

When you don't have colleagues around for lunch, you may return to your desk with some time still left on your break. Your priority is to get work done, but don't be so hard on yourself. Use the extra minutes to walk around and stretch your body. Get your heart pumping and keep fit physically and mentally.

It’s absurd how easily you can get tempted to scroll down social media or watch an episode of your favourite TV show during the break. And it’s preposterous how “just 5 minutes” magically turns into 50 minutes gone just like that. Instead, limit your screen time even for a few minutes to give your eyes some well-deserved rest.

Make good use of time management apps like RescueTime, TimeOut, and Smart Break to track time and prevent overworking.

Supplementary Tips

Apart from the tips we discussed, here are a few additional pointers to help you reach the potential you were always capable of:

Maintain a proper diet and sleep schedule
  • * Exercise regularly, keeping your body and mind in check
  • * Work from cafes or hybrid workspaces once a week, if possible
  • * Ditch the pyjamas and get dressed for work
  • * Play music or use noise-cancelling headphones to cut off distracting sounds
