Long hair; are you a “Hair Hoarder?”

  • Written by Cara Leupuscek, educational columnist and journalist

There are several motives behind the need for long hair.  Whether it may be the belief that you think you look more “feminine”, the use of long hair to disguise and blanket for security, comfortability and the feeling of believing it is more attractive, slimmer and youthful looking, when in most cases it can all be the exact opposite. There comes a time where “hair hoarding” is evident and the need to let it go is harder than other important life commitments. This article explores “Hair Hoarding” as a whole, from the roots and ways to overcome and liberate yourself, feeling more youthful, free, young, feminine & attractive without the excess damaged strings of hair.

This article isn’t about telling you to cut your hair bob or pixie short, but to mentally accept if you have split ends, and if your hair needs to be styled from extra-long hair to simply “long hair” or from long hair to “medium hair” is understanding the acceptance and flexibility for healthy hair and long term health and mental balance. Once you make a positive acceptance and change, you will have more control back in your life. Similar to regular “hoarding” you will find that new positive experiences will naturally substitute what you once called “Long Hair”.

What is long hair; this may seem like a stupid question, when I ask this to anyone, they have responded with: “it’s just long hair”. Long hair hoarding can sometimes mean: a memory in your past where you loved the way you felt that time when you had long hair then, it can mean holding on to something from your past or holding onto an unwanted energy flow. 70% of people with long hair have over 80% of damaged broken ends, dryness and brittle ends. You need to ask yourself if you are in this majority, you should listen to you your local hairdresser when they say “you need a good cut”. Otherwise it will end up looking worse as the weeks go on. In other words, accept what you have as opposed to trying to keep the damaged hair, which can lead to worse outcomes; e.g. unrealistic hair colour expectations, more unrealistic maintenance which sometimes can’t be balanced in your everyday life, inner and outer hair stress & strong breakage. Fortunately there are some who can most definitely get away with luxurious long hair, as it is mainly from genetics, and correct dietary patterns it is in balance with their age, facial features, lifestyle and correct maintenance.

“I am losing my hair”: Focusing on the density rather than the length is crucial in this scenario. Instead of the other way around. If you are visually seeing your scalp through your hair you need to concentrate on thick blunt hair styles rather than stringy, wispy long styles as this will make your hair look thinner than it already is. Hair growth vitamins, shorter blunt haircut styles which compliment your face shape and bone structure,  corrective stimulating shampoos and conditioners, treatments and maintain a healthy balanced diet from professional nutritionists or naturopaths is effective at this time.

“No one has ever seen my hair without extensions”: This is quite an unhealthy lifestyle both mentally and physically. Not only are permanent and clip in hair extensions quite damaging as they cause friction if used every day, but can lead to additional stress, alopecia and unrealistic beliefs when trying to instantly colour correct and match the “thick lustrous 100% Remy human hair” to fine sparse hair.

“I’m afraid I’ll look old with short hair”: it has been evident in most cases that the statement is true only in complete reverse. There are so many effective hairstyles which looks soft youthful and vibrant on shorter hair as opposed to ratty, damaged long hair. Explore what suits your individuality, face shape, bone structure and unique personality. Talk to your friends, family and hair stylist for fashion opinions. You may be surprised what they have to say!

“My husband only likes long hair”:  I have heard this hundreds of times over. This is a common story of sharing the “Hair Hoarding”. Though statistics reveal that the more feminine a male wants his partner to look, the more masculine he wants to feel. This may be a personal insecurity issue that some alpha males need to overcome themselves, whether they’d prefer their partners to have a certain height, weight, hair colour etc. it’s all just personal preference. In the long run, your soulmate who loves you with love you for your inner beauty unconditionally. As you would theirs.

“Long hair makes me look skinnier”: The truth is that regular exercise and correct balanced diet makes you look skinnier. This is the common “comfort blanket scenario”. If you ask your personal hair stylist they will be happy to give you lots of hair style ideas that will suit your face shape. if you have a round or heart shape face which is naturally has a wider shape, try a style which elongates the jaw line e.g try to avoid short fringes, and shorter layers.

-Liberating yourself from any unhealthy or unbalanced addictions can not only save you money, but it can save you time, health and open new exciting doors for you in your lifestyle, mentality and inner being.
