Roti to Ronut - Masterchef's Pete Gets Creative

  • Written by Charlotte Lewis

MasterChef Australia star Pete Campbell has revealed his new kitchen secret weapon – his go-to freezer staple that can be used as the key ingredient in both sweet and savoury dishes, across a wide range of cuisines.

Campbell reveals he keeps a packet of Katoomba Roti Breads at the ready – not just because is it one of the best traditional Indian flatbreads he has eaten, with an amazing 64 layers, but because it can be used in so many different ways

The MasterChef Australia 2021 runner-up, who was known for his incredible creativity on the reality TV cooking competition, has even created a cronut – a roti donut – using Katoomba Roti Breads. He also uses the versatile ingredient to make a Beef Roti Pie, Rueben Roti Roll and a Roti Quesatacos, among other recipes.

Campbell says the list of options is endless.

“Katoomba Roti Breads can be used to replace any wrap, bread, dough or pastry application,” Campbell said, adding he always keeps a packet in his freezer.

“I’ve made tacos, pies, cones, dumplings and donuts (aka Ronuts) all using Katoomba Roti Bread.”

Katoomba Roti Breads is more than just a traditional Indian flatbread to enjoy with your favourite south-east Asian curry, it is fast overtaking puff pastry as the go-to for many Aussie chefs and home cooks.

But even when it comes to traditional uses, Campbell says Katoomba Roti Breads is restaurant quality – yet can be cooked by even the most basic home chef.

“The taste and texture of this roti is as good as I’ve tried anywhere,” Campbell said.

“It is so easy to cook. If you have a pan and some heat, you are set. Literally anyone can do it.”

Katoomba Roti Breads is available from ethnic food stores, independent supermarkets, Costco, Woolworths and Coles across Australia. It comes in a 20-pack, 30-pack and now a newly released six-pack.

The privately owned Katoomba Global Foods, based in Melbourne and with facilities across Australia, has introduced the smaller pack to meet huge customer demand and to allow individuals to trial the unique and delicious Roti Breads.

Katoomba Global Foods national commercial manager Joe Mastroianni says what sets Katoomba Roti Breads apart from its supermarket rivals is its traditional authentic style, quality ingredients, state-of-the-art manufacturing – and, of course, its incredible 64 layers of pastry.

“Our product contains the most number of layers – 64 layers – which provides for a crispy almost croissant-like texture which is delicious,” Mr Mastroianni says.

Katoomba Global Foods was a pioneer in introducing Asian-style flatbreads into Australian supermarket.

Katoomba Global Foods is an Australian privately owned business which started as a small spice milling unit in Malaysia. The business moved to Australia in 1987, initially manufacturing and distributing ginger and garlic paste to the food service industry.

Since then, it has grown and has established itself as a dominant international foods player servicing high-volume customers across retail, food service, manufacturing, and distribution.

Katoomba Global Foods’ strength is its experience and reputation of building strong partnerships with customers through its expertise, high-quality standards and a global supply network.

Today, the company imports from over 14 different countries. The company has its head office in Melbourne and state-of-the-art warehousing and distribution facilities in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth.
