One of the most important reasons to consider changing your locks that few people think of is after a breakup.

The benefits of changing your locks after a breakup extend beyond simply making sure your ex doesn't barge their way back in to pick up an old hoodie unannounced.

It can also be a way for you to make a clean break with your past and move on. Read on to find out more about how you should change the locks after a breakup. 


1. Use a Locksmith

One of the main benefits of changing your locks after a breakup is that you can send a message to your ex that it is absolutely over. The most effective way to do this is to hire a professional locksmith who will get the job done for you.

An experienced locksmith will have helped out people in your situation countless times in the past. They will be understanding and friendly, changing your locks for you in a few minutes flat.  


2. Purchase a Lock from the Hardware Store and Learn How to Change It  

If you have ended a relationship and wish to change the locks on your own, then you will need to get some practice in. For this, you can teach yourself. First, make sure to measure your current locks to make sure you buy ones that will fit your door.

Then, you can head to your nearest hardware store and buy the right locks for you. After this, a simple YouTube tutorial will show you how to swap out your old locks for new ones. All you need is some elbow grease and a few basic tools. 


3. Remove Old Hidden Keys and Don't Hide Spares in the Same Spot 

If you are changing the locks because you are concerned about your safety, be careful not to leave your spare keys in the same spot as before.

4. Don't Give Spare Keys to Mutual Friends 

Finally, it is important that you do not give a spare key to anyone who is also friends with your ex. The closure is crucial, and giving a key to someone who is also friends with your ex can be a risky endeavor.

No matter how much you might trust that friend, it is always better to give a spare key to someone who truly has no connection to your ex. This will keep you safe and help you move on.
