Breaking Myths and Misconceptions: Debunking Common SMP Misbeliefs

How many times have you postponed getting a Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) procedure due to the myths and misconceptions surrounding the topic? Countless, we're guessing. And, we get it - it’s easy to look away from something too good to be true, especially when it’s a cosmetic procedure and is likely to make or mar your appearance.

However, SMP is truly an innovative solution to kiss goodbye to your hair woes without opting for painful and expensive surgeries. To help you shake off your fear and confusion, we have drafted this blog that debunks all common myths about the hair SMP procedure - read on to learn more!

Common Myths and Misconceptions About Scalp Micropigmentation

SMP Has a Tattoo-Like Appearance

Scalp Micropigmentation results are nowhere close to resembling a typical tattoo. In fact, once you get the procedure, no one can tell it’s a hd haeair tattoo unless you let the secret out. Here is why: Scalp Micropigmentation utilises specialised pigments designed to match your hair colour and skin tone to create a seamless look.

The final results are determined mainly by the type of practitioner you choose. If it’s done by a reputable SMP practitioner, they can meticulously apply the colour pigments in a way that mimics your hair follicles, ensuring a natural appearance.

SMP is Painful

Not true! In fact, candidates who’ve undergone a Scalp Micropigmentation procedure claim it’s less painful than getting a body tattoo. That said, getting a head hair tattoo is tolerable. Plus, to calm your mind, the needles penetrate a depth of 0.3 to 1.2 mm, which is shallower than traditional tattoos. On a scale of 1-10, the pain level is usually a 4. You can still ask the practitioner to apply a numbing cream if you think a 4 is too much.

SMP is Only Perfect For Bald Men

SMP is indiscriminate of gender. Whether you are a woman experiencing hair thinning at the back of your scalp or a man with a receding hairline, you can truly milk the benefits of a hair tattoo. With the right practitioner, you can treat the affected areas of your scalp, creating an illusion of thick and full hair. For any man dealing with a receding hairline, there is quite a wide variety of hairline styles you can rock to bring back your hair confidence. Other candidates suitable for Scalp Micropigmentation include cancer patients, individuals with hair loss conditions like Alopecia areata, and male pattern baldness.

SMP is Permanent and Unchangeable

While SMP is designed to be long-lasting, it’s not permanent like the typical tattoo you would put on your wrist. It’s a semi-permanent solution that fades over time (typically after 4 years or longer). Most people with a hair tattoo are required to go for touch-up sessions every few years to maintain realistic and natural-looking results. Talking of touch-ups, you might wonder about maintenance. Honestly, SMP doesn’t require high maintenance, as most people presume. All you need is a mild shampoo, moisturiser, and sunscreen to protect your scalp from excessive sun exposure.

SMP Has Better Results If You Only Have Dark Hair and Dark Skin

Again, this is a myth that most people should do away with. As mentioned, the Scalp Micropigmentation procedure utilises specialised colour pigments. There is quite a wide variety of colour pigments available to help match the skin tone and hair colour of diverse people. Whether you have grey or curly hair, you can rest assured that the practitioner will use a colour pigment that seamlessly blends with your complexion.

Scalp Micropigmentation is Very Expensive

Compared to other hair loss treatments like hair transplants, SMP is not expensive. To ensure you are not being charged more than usual, we recommend you compare prices from different clinics in your area. This way, you can get a good range. Keep in mind that cheap is expensive, and paying more doesn’t guarantee exceptional results. Check out reviews and before-and-after photos to ensure you get the best value for your money.

Now that you know all the facts about the hair tattoo, you can confidently schedule a pre-consultation. Make sure you do your due diligence and research well to ensure you give the job to the right SMP clinic. We hope you have a seamless experience as you begin your SMP journey.
