Identifying the Ideal Time to Treat Varicose Veins

The human body is uniquely formidable and resistant to many infections and conditions threatening general health. But the body tends to lose strength as we age, making it susceptive to different diseases and infections that affect its functionality. We know of many illnesses that are more prevalent among older people. Some are terminal while the others are not, but they can all be discomforting and prevent people from enjoying retirement.

One condition commonly experienced by many older adults is varicose veins, but only a few people know how to identify it. In fact, many people with this condition do not know what plagues them, let alone how to go about the treatment. This article will explain the varicose vein condition while highlighting the best time to treat it. Please read to the end for more eye-opening information on the topic.

What Are Varicose Veins?

A varicose vein is a condition characterized by the appearance of twisted and enlarged veins, mainly around the leg. The veins closer to the skin typically begin to increase in size, but it is often invisible at the earlier stages. Although it can happen to young people, the condition is more common among older people. Statistics show that more than 50% of women above 50 years suffer from this condition, affecting almost 40% of men of a similar age range.

The exact cause of this condition is yet to be identified. But it can be triggered by some factors like pregnancy, obesity, and standing for too long. However, the good news is that treatments have been introduced to help manage this condition and provide relief for patients.

The Best Time to Treat Varicose Veins

Treatments for varicose veins include endovenous ablation, a minimally invasive treatment proven very effective. With this treatment, a laser is used to cauterise and close the varicose veins. Like other treatment methods however, it endovenous laser treatment is a process that is most effective during colder months of the year. For this reason, varicose veins are often only treated during winter periods, and here’s why.

  • * Firstly, the optimal healing process may require patients to wear compression socks to help their condition. Compression stockings are advised during treatment because they fit comfortably, improving the rate of blood circulation around the leg. However, they may not be very comfy during the hot winter months. They can generate heat, which is not very good for the treatment procedure.

  • * Secondly, if you start your treatment in winter, the chances are that you will be due for surgery in or before January. Just in time for insurance to cover the bills before it is time for a turnover. Not to say the treatments are very expressive, but who wouldn’t want to save costs with insurance?

  • * Lastly, varicose veins can be obvious in their advanced stages, and the sight is not very inspiring. Therefore, you would want to conclude the treatment before summer, when you may have to wear revealing attire.

Conclusion

A varicose vein may not sound severe enough, but the condition can be very damning. If not treated promptly, it can also lead to more complicated issues like deep vein thrombosis and peripheral artery disease. Therefore, it is only fitting that you consult your doctor as soon as you notice any inconveniences relating to your veins. The best time of year to treat varicose veins has been highlighted in this article.

If you suffer from even a mild case of varicose veins, it’s strongly advised that you book an appointment with a prominent GC vascular surgeon who can treat your varicose veins for you.
