Debunking The Most Common Myths About the Human Brain

The human brain is a fascinating organ and central to life as we know it. Interestingly, it produces just 23 watts of electricity. That’s enough to power a small light bulb. Yet, the brain is effectively the most powerful organ on the planet. It is responsible for all the developments that humans have made and is the control center for everything your body does.

It should be noted that even the best neurosurgeon doesn’t know everything about the brain. There are still many things that are unknown about the human brain. But, research is ongoing and it is possible to debunk an array of common myths.

We Only Use 10% Of It

You have probably heard this many times but, the simple fact is that if we only used 10% of our brain. This is actually a myth. After all, if we only used 10% of our brain we wouldn’t have to worry about brain damage as it would be highly unlikely to affect the critical 10%.

In fact, humans use the majority of the brainpower available to them.

Brain Damage Is A Permanent Issue

The brain can be easily damaged, especially by trauma as it is surprisingly fragile. However, just like any other part of your body, it can heal. The real question is how much damage has your brain sustained and where. This will affect the ability and time it takes to heal.

But, it is possible for your brain to heal.

The Human Brain Is The Largest On The Planet

Humans are generally considered to use their brains more than other animals on the planet. This can be considered true as humans are able to create things and work out sophisticated problems. Of course, it is hard to tell how much of the brain this uses and how this compares to other creatures.

But, the human brain is certainly not the largest in size or in proportion to the size of the human body. It weighs approximately three pounds, the brain of a sperm whale weighs in at approximately 18 pounds!

Brain Cell death Is Permanent

Brain cells die, this is the same as any other cell in your body and is part of the natural process of life. However, contrary to popular belief, once the brain cells die new ones are formed. This is true even in old age. In short, if you use it you can retain your brainpower throughout life.

Alcohol Kills Brain Cells

You may have been told that if you drink too much alcohol you’ll kill your brain cells and they will be gone for good. Of course, we now know that brain cells aren’t gone for good.

In addition, current research hasn’t found any link between drinking and brain cell death.

Additional Thoughts

The brain is incredibly complex and there are still many things that are unknown about it. But, what is certain is that improving your knowledge of your brain will help to improve your mental health. It can even potentially improve your physical health.
