TENS Machine: Relieve Pain Without Oral Medications

People who suffer from chronic pain or acute pain from an injury may constantly rely on oral medications. However, this may pose a few risks, such as drug dependency. Fortunately, an alternative solution is using a TENS machine.

The Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) device uses electrical impulses to alleviate pain. It has become increasingly popular in recent years as people look for alternative methods to manage pain conditions. In this article, we will explore what a TENS machine is, how it works, and the various benefits it offers.

What is a TENS Machine?

A TENS machine is a small device that uses electrical currents to manage pain. It sends low-voltage electrical pulses through electrodes placed on the skin. Then, these will stimulate the nerves and block pain signals from reaching the brain.

TENS machines are commonly used to treat chronic pain conditions such as arthritis, back pain, and fibromyalgia and can be used in conjunction with other pain management techniques such as medication and physical therapy. They are often available for purchase over the counter or can be prescribed by a healthcare provider.

How Does a TENS Machine Work?

Patients can use a TENS machine with high and low frequency levels. High frequency closes the neural gates in the spinal cord to prohibit pain signals from reaching the brain. On the other hand, low frequency allows the production of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.

To operate the TENS device, place the electrodes over or near the pain area. Turn on the device. Set the frequency and intensity to the lowest levels to avoid sudden shocks. Then, gradually increase the intensity to a stronger but comfortable level. The tingling sensations should provide relief and not further discomfort. An individual can use the device for up to an hour. If using multiple times, take a 20-minute break in between. After the session, turn the device off before removing the electrodes.

Benefits of a TENS Machine

The TENS machine is a non-invasive and drug-free pain relief. As it only adheres to the skin, it does not pose risks to the internal organs. Moreover, it reduces the intake of oral medicines, which may pose drug addiction. Furthermore, a TENS device does not have adverse side effects. However, patients with sensitive skin may experience redness where the electrodes are attached. In this situation, hypoallergenic gel pads are also available to use.

In addition, the device is portable. iTENS Australia offers iTENS, the world's first FDA-approved wireless TENS medical device. It is discreet when worn under clothes, as a patient may use it while being active. Also, it has Bluetooth connectivity which allows an individual to control pain relief with a smartphone app.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the TENS machine is a safe, non-addictive, and convenient method to relieve pain. It is applied externally and reduces the intake of oral medications. Moreover, it is easy to use and portable, which allows an individual to use the device anytime and anywhere without professional supervision.
