Kitchen and Laundry Makeover Ideas That Don't Require a Full Renovation

Full kitchen renos are expensive — and most people don't actually need one.

They need the kitchen to stop looking like it's stuck in 2009, or they need the laundry to feel less like a punishment room. That's a very different job from knocking out walls and re-plumbing everything.

So before you start pricing up a full kitchen renovation in Brisbane, have a think about these instead.

Cheaper, faster, and honestly, most of them you can knock over on a weekend.

Get New Handles

Nobody thinks about their cabinet handles until someone points them out, and then suddenly that's all you can see.

Got old brass with the finish rubbed off, or those little chrome knobs from whoever built the house? Swap them. New handles in black, brass, or a chunky timber pull make cabinets that are otherwise perfectly fine look intentional again.

You just need a screwdriver and a couple of minutes.

Paint the Cabinets

If your cupboards are structurally fine but the colour makes you a bit sad, don't rip them out. Get them painted.

There are proper cabinet paints made for this now, and done right, they hold up. Dark lower cabinets with lighter uppers are having a moment if you want that look, but honestly, even a straight coat of white over tired laminate does more than people expect.

The same trick works in the laundry. Nobody's cupboards are winning any design awards, so paint's a low-risk move.

Resurface the Benchtop

Stone benchtops cost a fortune.

If yours is scratched or just looking tired, but it's not actually falling apart, look into resurfacing before you commit to replacing it. The laminate options around now are genuinely convincing — you'd have to get close and touch it to know.

It's one of those jobs that gets you 80% of the visual upgrade for a lot less than 80% of the cost.

Add Some Lighting

Most kitchens run on one flat light in the ceiling, and that's the whole lighting plan.

Chuck some strip lighting under the top cabinets, and suddenly the benchtop looks like somewhere you'd actually want to cook.

In the laundry, people forget lighting entirely — it's usually whatever bulb was cheapest at the time. A brighter fixture over the trough makes folding and washing at night marginally less miserable.

Small thing, but you'll notice it every single day!

Practical Tapware

A dripping, dated tap drags the whole sink area down no matter what else you've done. Swap it for a decent mixer tap, maybe one with a pull-down spray if you actually cook, and the whole area feels newer.

The same goes for the laundry trough tap — it's usually the last thing anyone thinks about, which is exactly why replacing it makes such a difference.

It's a cheap job for a tradie, and it's done in under an hour.

Sort the Storage

Half the reason people hate their kitchen isn't the look; it's that nothing has a home.

Pull-out bins, proper shelving, a hook where there wasn't one before — it’s cheap, and it solves the stuff that actually annoys you day to day. The laundry benefits from this more than any other room in the house.

A fold-down drying rack or a slim shelf above the machine, and suddenly the room does its job instead of fighting you. It’s one of those simple things that make your laundry renovation in Brisbane worth every dollar.

The Splashback Trick Nobody Talks About

An old, grimy splashback ages a kitchen faster than almost anything else, but you don't need a tiler and three days of mess to fix it.

Peel-and-stick splashback panels have come a long way, or you can get a single sheet of toughened glass installed without touching a single pipe or wire.

It looks a lot more expensive than it is, which is exactly the point.

Getting the Right Gear in Brisbane

None of this works if the parts are cheap and the install is rushed.

All Bathroom Gear is a name a lot of Brisbane locals already trust, and they know their way around more than just bathrooms.

Worth a call before you buy tapware or fixtures for either of these makeovers — save yourself a second trip.
