Essential Tips for Keeping Your Internal Plantation Shutters Looking Like New

  • Written by Modern Australian

Internal plantation shutters are stylish and functional window decorations that may increase the value and refinement of any property. These shutters are designed to fit perfectly inside the window frame, offering a sleek and streamlined appearance that matches any decor style. Internal plantation shutters, with their adjustable louvres, provide privacy, light control, and ventilation, making them a great solution for any room in the house. Internal plantation shutters are an excellent alternative if you are renovating your house, creating a new one, or simply looking to enhance existing window treatments.

Because of their classic design and versatility, internal plantation shutters are a popular window treatment alternative for homeowners. They do, however, require adequate upkeep, just like any other home element, to keep them looking their best. Here are some pointers for keeping your inside plantation shutters in good condition:

  • Regular Dusting

Dusting your shutters regularly is one of the easiest ways to keep them looking clean and new. Use a soft, dry cloth or a feather duster to remove any dust or debris from the slats. You can also use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove dust from hard-to-reach areas.

Make sure to dust both the top and bottom of the slats, as well as the frame and hinges. Regular dusting will not only keep your shutters looking clean, but it will also help prevent dirt and grime buildup that can be more difficult to clean later on.

  • Deep Cleaning

While regular dusting is important, sometimes your shutters may require a deeper cleaning. To deep clean your shutters, you will need a bucket of warm water and a mild soap or detergent. Using a soft cloth or sponge, gently wipe down the slats and frame, making sure to remove any dirt or grime.

Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbing too hard, as this can damage the finish of the shutters. After cleaning, use a clean, dry cloth to remove any excess water and allow the shutters to air dry.

  • Avoid Water Damage

While it is important to clean your shutters, it is also important to avoid water damage. Plantation shutters are not designed to get wet, so be careful not to use too much water when cleaning. Use a damp cloth or sponge rather than soaking the shutters in water.

Also, make sure to dry the shutters thoroughly after cleaning to prevent any water damage or warping. If you live in a humid climate, consider using a dehumidifier to help prevent moisture buildup.

  • Lubricate the Hinges

The hinges on your shutters are an important component that allows them to open and close smoothly. Over time, the hinges can become stiff and difficult to operate, making it harder to adjust the slats.

To keep the hinges functioning properly, use a silicone-based lubricant or a non-stick cooking spray. Apply a small amount of lubricant to the hinges and use a cloth to spread it evenly. This will help keep the hinges working smoothly and prevent any squeaking or stiffness.

  • Repair Damages Promptly

Even with regular maintenance, accidents can happen, and your shutters may become damaged. Whether it's a broken slat or a damaged hinge, it is important to repair any damages promptly to prevent further issues.

If you are handy, you may be able to repair minor damages yourself. However, for more extensive damage, it is best to hire a professional to make the necessary repairs. Delaying repairs can lead to more serious issues and may even require the replacement of the entire shutter.
