Australia’s Favourite Dogs and Why

  • Written by NewsServices.com

Last year, the number of pet dogs in the country was an estimated 6.3 million, according to an Animal Medicines Australia report. Of this number, 51% are said to be purebred, 33% are mixed, and 15% are designer dogs. But what are the most popular breeds of the previous year and why?

Based on Hill’s analysis of 473 dog searches on Google, the following are Australia’s top 6 trending breeds of 2021:

#6 Pomeranian

Originating from sled dogs, the Pomeranian secured the sixth spot in 2021 with over 1.2 million searches. This foxy-faced toy breed with a tiny body is adored not only for its appearance but also for its exceptional temperament.

Born an extrovert, this dog is active, alert, and independent. It is affectionate and has a funny sense of humour. It is also curious and loves to explore around the house.

An intelligent breed, the Pomeranian can be easily trained to do whatever is asked of it. This makes it both a great pet and watchdog for families with children.

#5 Cavoodle

From number one in 2020, the Cavoodle fell to number five in 2021 with approximately 1.3 million Google searches. However, this mixed breed remains to be very popular throughout Australia. According to Google Australia KW Planner, the average monthly search for Cavoodles in NSW, Queensland, and Victoria were 40,500; 18,100; and 33,100 respectively from December 2020 to November 2021.

A cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Toy or Miniature Poodle, the Cavoodle is much adored for its gentle and affectionate nature. It is playful and eager to please, making it suitable for singles, families, and seniors. It is also friendly and gets along well with children and other pets.

The Cavoodle thrives on human companionship and loves being given attention. Due to its small size, it adapts easily to any living environment, whether a tiny apartment or a large house. A backyard is not necessary as long as this hybrid gets its daily exercise.

#4 Rottweiler

Coming in at fourth is the Rottweiler which has over 1.4 million searches in 2021 - an increase of 64% year-over-year. What makes this ancient German breed a favourite is its wonderful temperament.

Originally bred to drive cattle and guard outposts, this purebred makes a steadfast guard dog. When properly socialised, it is incredibly loving and loyal. It will get along nicely with humans and other dogs.

An intelligent breed, the Rottweiler is very easy to train. While a bit dominant, it is also obedient and willing to learn from someone they love and trust.

#3 German Shepherd

Also called the Alsatian in Great Britain and some parts of Europe, the German Shepherd moves from sixth place in 2020 to third in 2021 with more than 1.4 million searches - an increase of 60% year-over-year.

One of the most recognised breeds in the world, this large dog is a known guardian. It is incredibly loyal, which is why it comes as no surprise that it is always vigilant and protective of its family.

Despite having a tough exterior, this dog is very loving and easy-going. It may be reserved at first, but once it is comfortable, it is very approachable.

A highly intelligent purebred, the German Shepherd can be trained to do almost anything. This is why it is popular as a guide dog, military dog, and search and rescue dog.

#2 Border Collie

Known for having an intense stare, the Border Collie jumped up to second place in 2021 from fourth place in 2020 with over 15 million Google searches - an increase of 64% year-over-year. The rise in popularity is expected due to this purebred’s amazing personality.

Originally developed as a working and herding breed, the Border Collie is naturally alert, energetic, and hardworking. It is full of stamina and likes to be busy and challenged.

As a pet, it makes a wonderful companion. When properly socialised, it gets along easily with those in its circle - including children and other pets.

A smart dog, this purebred learns very quickly. This is why it is one of the top choices for various canine sports such as flyball, agility, obedience, flying disc, and tracking competitions.

#1 Golden Retriever

Topping the list of Australia’s most favourite dogs for 2021 is the Golden Retriever, which came at second place in 2020. Developed in Scotland, this purebred received over 1.7 million searches in the previous year - a whopping 57% increase year-over-year.

This is because it has an excellent temperament. The Golden Retriever is friendly, affectionate, loyal, and easy to care for. It has a playful approach in life and loves to please. It is gentle with children and gets along nicely with other pets. It is also energetic and enjoys indoor and outdoor play.

Intelligent, versatile, and even-tempered, this dog responds well to training. This is why it makes an excellent search and rescue pooch, service dog for the disabled, and contraband detection animal.
