Gynecomastia – Understanding the Facts and Treatment Options

Gynecomastia is a condition that causes enlarged breast tissue in men and one that can occur at any age. Along with sometimes causing physical discomfort, the condition can also affect a man’s self-esteem.

Causes and treatment options are often some of the most misunderstood aspects of this condition. This article aims to provide some clarity on this common condition and what the treatment options are.

Gynecomastia – A Look at the Facts & Treatment

Age Matters

Age does play a role in how likely it is for you to develop gynecomastia. While the condition can appear at almost any age, it is far more common amongst men who are 50 or older. In fact, at least 30% of men between the ages of 50 and 69 will develop enlarged breast tissue.

Apart from men over the age of 50, gynecomastia is also quite common in adolescent boys. Fortunately, the condition tends to resolve on its own over time. If the condition doesn’t disappear on its own, treatment options will need to be considered.

Hormones Play a Role

Many people tend to think that gynecomastia is only experienced by overweight and obese men but excess fat is hardly ever the reason for unusual growth in the chest area. This is because the development of excess breast tissue is mainly caused by a hormonal imbalance.

Men who have higher levels of oestrogen and lower levels of testosterone in their systems have a higher chance of developing male breasts. There are also certain types of prescription medication that are related to the development of male breasts. Endocrine issues and excessive alcohol consumption can also play a role.

Cosmetic Surgery is the Most Effective Treatment Option

Male breast reduction specialist in Sydney, Dr Safvat, is one of the many professionals who is helping men regain their confidence. During a gynecomastia procedure, the excess breast tissue is removed and the chest is contoured to achieve a more aesthetically appealing chest.

There are two different ways to approach gynecomastia surgery. In mild cases, fat reduction surgery is enough to reverse signs of the condition. However, in severe cases, a combined surgical approach will be required, which involves the removal of excess fat and breast tissue and the tightening of the skin. In fact, surgeons will take a very similar approach to female breast reduction surgery.

In cases where male breasts are the result of excess fat tissues alone, a new exercise routine, a healthy eating plan and medication are often enough to reverse the problem. If the condition doesn’t change after making necessary lifestyle changes, surgery may be the next best option.

The only real way to tell whether surgery or an alternative treatment is the best course of action is to schedule a consultation with a qualified surgeon who specialises in male breast reduction. By reviewing your medical history and the severity of the condition, your surgeon will be able to provide you with a professional recommendation so that you can get back to feeling like your old self as soon as possible.
